There are many alluring features that attract families to Davis, California. The proximity to San Francisco, Sacramento and Lake Tahoe, the safety factor and being a quant small college town are all attractive incentives that make Davis appealing, but the schools are the most significant quality that overrides those other amenities. Our school system has been rated near the top in the entire state of California for a number of years. The high scholastic rating is the most often stated reason for families selecting Davis over other local communities, even though our property values are double that of our esteemed neighbors. Every homeowner in Davis pays a school and library tax and the benefits stretch to more than just the satisfaction of being a top-rated school system, our home values have stabilized over the last three years with less than a two percent fluctuation in prices.
With our state budget situation in dire straits and school funds limited, our community through a grassroots committee has proposed a parcel tax, Measure C, the parcel tax renewal will be decided in a vote-by-mail-election. Ballots will be mailed to Davis voters on February 6th and due to the Yolo County Elections Office by March 6th. Passage of Measure C would provide $6.5 million or slightly more than ten percent of our district’s budget. The tax renewal would help fund courses that might otherwise disappear. From elementary science courses to foreign language and advanced placement courses would benefit from this highly recommended parcel tax.
State funds support a basic education, local bond measures provide the necessary support for the programs that allows Davis to stand out as an exceptional place to own a home and raise a family. Bonds are a funding source for locally controlled, not state mandated decisions that enhances the quality of education that Davis schools offer. Everything else being fairly equal, prospective home buyers are willing to pay substantially more for a home in Davis because they recognize the advantages of a great school system. My company, Coldwell Banker in Davis has contributed $5000.00 to the campaign for passage of Measure C. Whether we have children in school or not, every resident in Davis has a vested interest in our schools. We encourage a Yes vote on Measure C to fund our critical school programs.
